I keep saying that every project on my mantle is my favorite.
But this one really is.
Hubby teases me about it because we had this HUGE fight about some deer-heads he had.
Basically, I didn't want them in the house because they creep me out and he didn't like that.
He got over it though and they live happily in our garage.
So when I painted this little beauty he pretended to get all huffy and tell me that if I had wanted the deer back in the house, all I had to do was ask.
I proceeded to tell him that this was a 'reindeer' and that ended the arguement.
Because they're totally different, duh.
Isn't he regal?
I'm kind of in love with reindeer...just to warn you.
I think they're beautiful and they have that 'magical' feel that just surrounds them.
So I loved the idea of painting one.
Some friends of mine had given me random shelves they were getting rid of so I used a thin square piece of laminate from that pile.
I used this fabulous site called block posters that lets you upload pictures and then breaks them into squares for you so you can print them out huge.
Love it.
I had found a reindeer shape that I liked so I uploaded it and made it into a simple 2x2 pattern.
I printed it and then laid it out on my board to make sure it fit.
Then I proceeded to paint it a glossy white.
I used a roller to get a nice even coat on it.
While that dried, I yet again cut out the design by hand.
This was much easier than cutting letters out, I was able to just use a piar of scissors to get the job done.
I used the negative portion to make my stencil and used a round pouncer to paint it.
I love the new Martha Stewart ones and they worked great for this project.
I absolutely love how it turned out.
The black and white is just stunning.
Don't you agree that he looks quite regal?
And he looks lovely all lit up with lights...
so we're definitely going to go with this being my favorite Christmas project thus far.
I'm sure he'll be named soon...
because that's just how life is around here :)
Do you love reindeer as much as I do?
Oh guys...if you need a laugh you have to check out the video I posted of my little boy last night.
Let's just say that it involves his elf on a shelf, a slight 'accident' and a hilarious reaction from my son.
If you're curious, check it out here.
And don't mind my southern accent, kay?

ReplyDeletelooks great! I think if I'd do this I'd cheat and use my cutting machine.
ReplyDeleteYours came out great! I've been wanting to try something like this ever since the RHBC did it on the Nate show. But I feel the same way about antlers that you do, need to come up with a different image for my house. Nice work!

What a cute and cleaver idea...and you are right, he looks very regal. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I just made my own reindeer for my fireplace too. It's even more like your husbands heads, but instead of being furry it's covered in glitter. I agree w/ you on the creepy factor of dead animal heads, I'm just glad my boyfriend isn't a hunter so we don't need to have that discussion. There is one dear I've seen on Pinterest that I might make an exception for though. It has a wig, false eyelashes, and a pearl necklace on. Maybe suggest that to your hubbs.
