Heading out of my Comfort Zone: Two-Toned Dresser Redo

Whew.
It's been a day.

And most definitely a monday.
Sorry this post is getting up so late...
Just a bajillion little things that led to having no time to sit down and chat it up here.
Until now :)

I've been dying to share my newest furniture redo with you guys and see what you think.
I'm pretty used to keeping it simple and within my 'comfortable' color schemes.
So I was excited to go outside my comfort zone and go in a different direction than I usually do.

A friend of mine offered me this dresser when her parents were moving and getting rid of some of their childhood stuff.
This dresser had seen better days so it came to live in my garage :)

Check it out...

So this guy hung around a bit until the weather finally allowed for some good painting to happen.
It took a bit for inspiration to hit but thanks to the back-up I got from my Facebook friends,
I decided to go with the beautiful grey I picked up at Habitat for five bucks.

I love the slatted design on the tops and sides.
And the grey was the perfect, silky hue for it.

While the first coat dried, I played with the hardware.
Changing the hardware wasn't much of an option for this piece considering I would have to do something about the giant holes that they live in if I did.
So I stuck with the original pieces.

The color scheme I had in my head didn't scream oil-rubbed bronze.
So I decided to just glaze the original brass.
It ended up with a nice worn look that I loved!

I used some black acrylic paint, brushed it on, and then gently wiped it off.
I didn't really wipe it off much to leave the look I wanted.
Once it dried, it was good to go.

Want to see the difference?

This is where I strayed off my normal path.
Usually, I'd go all one gorgeous color, maybe some distressing and glaze.
Or possibly some white accenting.

But I really liked the idea of keeping some of the wood color around.
But I wasn't head-over-heels in love with the color of the original wood.

So I decided to tape off the middle insets of the drawers after I painted them.
I painted the edges the grey color and then used painters tape to tape off the middle part.

I did let the grey paint dry overnight to keep it from lifting the paint right off though.

Here's where these guys came into play...
some of my favorite go-to helpers to get the job done :)

I used the pre-stain conditioner to prep the wood after I gave it a good sanding.
Then I brushed on my dark walnut mixwax stain.

Here it is after a couple of coats:

Ok.
So I did something crazy here.

Bear with me.

I decided that even with the walnut stain, it wasn't giving me quite the rubbed aged look I was going for.
I stomped around a bit trying to decide what was bothering me and then it hit me.

Umm. My favorite thing in the world.
It needed glaze.
Duh.
(that was my internal monologue in case you were wondering)

I brushed the glaze on and oh.my.gosh. I was in love.
Head over heels love.

Now, I'm not going to go crazy and do this on every piece from now on, but it was the perfect touch that this guy needed :)

Go ahead.
Check out the difference for yourself and tell me it didn't make it look a bazillion times better!

I popped the drawers back in, took my sander to it for a few minutes to give it a good distressing then sealed it with a protective wax to give it a buttery, satin feel.

Check him out now!!!!

Ahh!!
Isn't he soooo good-looking??

I admit, I was nervous there for a bit about how it was going to really turn out but it looks so much better in reality than it did in my head!!!

Don't you love it when that happens??

And just in case you need another glimpse of it's humble beginning, here's a quick reminder...

I'm in love with him.
And I hope someone else is too because, sadly, we don't have room for him in our house.

So he'll be finding a new, fabulous home to live in :)
(Why is it a he?? Really. Who knows. It's how I picture it.)

So spill it you guys.
I'm anxious to hear what you think about my newest venture.

Loving the two-toned or is it not quite your cup of tea??

I have a ton more furniture redos coming up so gear up :)
And I hope you're as happy as I am that Monday is finally over and we're that much closer to spring break!!

Love you guys :)
'Nite.

A Little Table Redo

This week has been stress-city for us.
How about you?

If you follow me on facebook, you know that we took an impromptu run out to Competition, Missouri for a funeral.
Beautiful country, sad occasion.
And driving eight hours in a 24 hour period is rough.
Especially having class the very next day to catch up on.

I thought it'd be a pretty normal week of school but they love to throw stress-covered wrenches into the mix.
So keep your fingers crossed that I get good numbers in our lottery next week so I can pick decent electives.

Because that basically determines my stress load for the next year.

I took a bit of a break from fall this week and showed you my clock cloche on Monday.
So I thought I'd follow that trend and show you a quick furniture redo, kay kay?

I got this, er, beauty from goodwill a while back.
Cheap as dirt...and I think dirt was looking better...

It was outdated, worn out and needed a fresh facelift :)
So paint to the rescue!

I painted it my favorite go-to color at the moment- Pottery Barn Cream.

And then decided to add some extra fun to it with some stripes.
I taped them off with painters tape and used a glossy black for the stripes.

Aren't they purty?

I also added a stenciled design in the same glossy black to the bottom level.
In a total ADD moment, I failed to notice that my fleur-de-lis stencil I had just bought also included hearts...
hmmm.
I probably would have done something to get around that if I had not been so excited about the fleur de lis.
So they stay for now.

I used my antiquing glaze to go over the whole piece and then sealed it all with a clear gloss.

I love the stripes and the extra 'oomph' they give to it.
Doesn't everyone love a piece with 'oomph??'

And you can't go wrong with the classic black and white...

This piece was already put up on good ole' Craigslist and sold pretty quick.
Yay!

So I'm really hoping it's new owners are loving it :)

A quick before and after shot.
From sad and tired to fresh and 'oomph'-filled :)

Have you painted any fun pieces lately?
I'd love to see them.
Head over to my facebook page and share them with everyone!!!

I hope you guys have a fantastic weekend.
Mine will be filled with papers, figuring out my schedule and hopefully a couple of fun projects!!

Happy Friday my lovely followers  :)

Yellow Harlequin Table

Remember when I showed you my little sneak peek of a new piece I did?
Well can you believe that glimpse was of this little table?

I know, right?
This thing was just downright ugly.
But I loved the details on it.
And it's such a cute size.
And bonus, because it was only eight dollars from Goodwill :)

I've had it for almost a year...
but it immediately got put to use in the garage holding spraypaint.
Not it's intended purpose but it worked.
And got grimier :/

Let me tell ya,
this thing did NOT want to get painted.
It's actually all laminate- and those doors were a pain!!

First I scrubbed the whole thing out...
then it got three good coats of an oops Sherwin Williams yellow I had.
If I had not run out of primer, this would have gone a lot easier.
But it still would have taken several coats.

I gave the inside a whitewash in some white oil-based paint.
Oil based paint may be a messy thing to paint with, but it sure sticks around.
It keeps scratches away like a boss!
Which is good inside a cabinet :)

Here's the little cutie after two coats:

I decided the top needed a little extra sumthin-sumthin so I sketched out a harlequin pattern.
Super easy!
Just fold a piece of paper in half and cut a triangle.
Unfold and you have a perfect diamond shape.
Use that to trace around so you get your pattern.
I just lightly traced with a pencil.

Then I went in with my antique white acrylic paint and a small slanted brush,
and filled it in.
It might have taken a little bit of time but it wasn't hard and it made such a big impact on this piece.

I took some antiquing glaze to the whole thing-
it made the crevices all pop out.
And let me tell you- in 100 degree weather, you need to brush on and wipe off one right after the other.
It dries like crazy.
Ugh Arkansas humid heat.

I love the pattern on top :)

Little man had to pose with it cuz he's such a ham right now!

I kept the amazing handles their orginal color- I loved the antique dark brass.
It went perfect with the piece.

Isn't she so much lovelier now?

These little pieces are just as big a feat as larger pieces right now in this heat.
Hubby set up a small fan for me in the garage and that keeps me from literally melting away.
Because apparantly I'm crazy and can't help myself from still painting when the sun is trying to destroy us :)

This picture gives you a better idea of it's size- it's a perfectly sized table to fit in those little nooks.

And I'm just so in love with yellow right now...this piece just makes me happy :)

Can you believe how much of a different a little bit of paint made?

And here it is in it's new home...
right behind hubby's recliner.
It's the perfect place to store extra decor items-
I think it's currently holding candles, extra frames and some of little man's toys.

I love it with the blue wall behind it...
and the vases were the perfect addition.
Which is why they settled here rather than the craft room.

What do you think?
Does it make you happy too?

On another note...
my little fur babies love sitting outside while I paint.
I don't know what they'll do next week when I'm gone.
They won't know what to do with themselves :)

Two two-toned Makeovers

Say that five times fast :)

I've been sweating it up in the garage for the past couple days working on some fun pieces.
And I have a fabulous Fourth project to show you... but I'm keeping that til Monday :)
Just cuz I love you so much!

A while back, a friend of mine gave me several pieces she wanted redone.
Two of them were some crazy chunky end tables that were dying for some love.

See what I mean?
They were dying for some new paint...

So I gave them a fresh new look with a creamy paint I made by mixing some white paint into Rustoleum's Almond paint.
It turned to a lovely cream.
Then they were glazed with my trusty antiquing glaze.

And here's the baby of the two:

and he got some new hardware too:

Doesn't he look a bajillion times better?

Now big guy was painted after she noticed a coffee table I had done recently that I had done two-toned.
She loved it and asked if her pieces could be done that way.

So big guy got that treatment.
Although some of the top laminate was peeling away revealing the MDF underneath.
MDF doesn't have a wood grain and hates taking the stain.
But I randomly put some stain conditioner on it and it worked like a charm.
You can hardly tell that there isn't a wood grain in some of the areas.

I adore the dark stain color.

and the drawers on these guys are too cute :)

one last look at big guy:

After she saw how great big guy looked, I stripped the little one's top too and stained it.
So now they're a happy, matching pair!
